So, I guess there is an outfit out there advertising on some online wholesale horse transportation site that is using images from legitimate horse transportation companies to try and scam people.

EQUINE SHIPPERS TRANSPORT AGENCY FOR HORSE TRANSPORTATION WORLD WIDE.

This is how they seem to present themselves. The vehicles the show are not their vehicles and are no way connected with this company. I know this because a couple of the photos are of trucks I own. You shouldn't have to send money to any legitimate ground horse transportation company prior to pick up or delivery. If they ask for money to be wired, be suspicious.

Has anyone been scammed by this company?

Washington International Horse Show

So here we are coming up to the Washington International Horse Show in a week or so. Once again, the horse show management and one horse transportation company have decided that nobody else is qualified to bring horses to the horse show directly. Again this year, they will force exhibitors to go to a remote location and transfer their horses and equipment to other trucks to be taken to the show (Exhibitors are forced to pay for this if they want to show). Now, some may make you believe this was plan was implemented because of the Police Department, wrong. They may also have you believe all the other horse transporters approve of this, wrong. They will also make people believe this is a contract put out to bid, wrong.
The Washington International Horse Show is charging exhibitors for this which means they are assuming total responsibility. Seems like a pretty big liability for a horse show to undertake, but that is their business.
Now, you ask the grooms and other carriers if they like this. Most of them will say no, but trainers and owners don't seem to care what they think.

I own a horse transportation company, a few years ago I was offered a pretty big account. The farm owner wanted to know if I could bill his customers directly, then pay the farm owner a percentage. I told him if he wanted money from transportation charges that he would need to pay me directly, then he could add on whatever he wanted when he billed his customers. Needless to say, I didn't get the account. I wonder if the company who hauls for the barn now is giving a kickback to the owner?
I know I did the right thing, what would you have done?

Every day I see listings for horse transportation on Craig's List or other such sites. What people looking for horse transportation have to be careful of is that I believe these listings cannot be commercial, therefore I think the listings are from people who are not legally licensed to haul horses for hire. So just to be careful, if you do use someone from these sites, go to http://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx and enter their name, USDOT, or MC number to get a company snapshot. If they haul interstate, they must have a DOT number.

As a horse transporter I know what is involved to haul legally, and there is quite a bit of regulatory junk we have to go through. So, if you are thinking about catching a ride with someone, better see if they are licensed, otherwise they are working as your employee, which means you are responsible for what ever they do. I keep seeing it, postings saying "hey I have room on my trailer for two horses" These posts usually go on to say they are not a commercial horse transportation company, just someone with empty room on the trailer. This to me means they will haul your horse for free, right? If they charge you for the ride, then it becomes commercial no? Do the assume any responsibility for your horse? Just some food for thought.

So lately I have been seeing a number of blogs saying something like "have two spots on my trailer going from point x to point z, I'm not a commercial carrier, just someone going that way" This awful tempting if you are trying to find cheap horse transportation. If they ask for more than what gas, tolls, and other expenses are, they are hauling commercially. Do you know these people? If something happens to the truck, are they gonna ask you to help fix it? What if something happens to your horse, what happens if they hit something, are you partly responsible for any liability? Could be. What kind of equipment do they have, is it what you expected? Lots of questions to be answered. Be careful....

Well I guess this economy takes a toll on everything. As owner of a horse transportation company I have seen our business suffer because of it. We have quoted a number of long distance horse transportation jobs only to get beaten out by other outfits. We quoted the jobs at our standard rates, which used to be competitive, now though I guess we are too high! We have actually lost loads of customers that we have hauled for before! I guess if you are pretty much dead in the water, you work for nothing. I just hope these cheap companies don't injure any of the horses they are moving. As for the shippers, good luck with your horse transportation using these cheap entities. If the trip doesn't go so well for your horses, remember, you saved a few bucks.....

I read on another blog about the high cost of horse transportation to get to the world cup in Las Vegas. The cost that was thrown out there seemed very high. I feel that nobody should feel bad about the prices since they shipping costs don't seem to be shopped around. My company, Beacon Hill Horse Transportation for one was never asked for a quote, and I know if those prices that I read were accurate, there could be significant savings. Maybe if they continue to have the World Cup in Vegas, someone should get some other prices on horse transportation.

Remember, when you ship a horse it is always wise to use a licensed carrier. There are many people out there offering horse transportation through matching services, load boards, word of mouth, etc. Remember, when you use these people, you are assuming all responsibility unless you sign a bill of lading or some type of contract. You can check a horse transportation company out by going to the USDOT website and get a company snapshot, it will say if the outfit is authorized to haul for hire or not. Also, if you ship a horse it is wise to get details about the trip, who knows, your horse may end up on a truck for days longer than necessary.

So our economy in this country is going through a readjustment cycle, once all the problems sort themselves out, we should be back on the right track. Being in the horse transportation I can see some of the effects this readjustment period is having even on the very wealthy. I think there has been some scaling back in the horse industry, and I feel all of the related businesses that can weather the storm, will become that much stronger. One thing that has helped the horse transportation business lately is the drop in fuel prices, phew. I think a big mistake our government made was letting all those big oil companies merge. Those mergers eliminated competition in a big way, which of course helped lead to higher prices at the pumps.

I see a new search engine out there trying to promote themselves as listing the best of the sites you search. I am not sure how they rated the horse transportation sites, but some of the companies listed I have never heard of. The company I feel is the best, Beacon Hill Horse Transportation wasn't listed, but that may be because they didn't like the way www.beaconhilltransportation.com is set up. Well, if the site needs changes, let me know.

You can always get their US DOT (United States Department of Transportation) number and go to http://www.safersys.org/ and select company snapshot to check them out. You can see if they have met all the government requirements to transport interstate. If they are transporting interstate for hire, they must have a US DOT.
